Cheap Eats: Traditional Pasties With A Twist

Serves 4 | £1.47 per portion

Ingredients

  • 2 rolls Puff pastry

  • 200g Diced beef

  • 200g Swede, diced

  • 2 carrots, diced

  • 1/2 onion, diced

  • 2 medium potatoes, diced

  • 50g watercress, chopped

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180

  2. Using a plate or bowl, cut 4 circles from your pastry sheets, 2 on each roll.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, add all your ingredients, plus a small pinch of salt and a generous spoonful of black pepper. Give it a toss to coat everything.

  4. On each circle, gently mark it in the centre so you can see two halves. Divide your mixture among the 4 pastry circles, placing it on one of the halves and leaving a little room around the edge to make your seal.

  5. Fold the pastry over, and seal the pasties around the semi circle edge, crimping it with your fingers as you go (if you’re getting the kids involved, you can squash the sides together in your fingers and score them with a fork too!)

  6. Brush the tops of the pasties with either egg or milk, place on a baking tray and bake in the oven for around 45 minutes – until the pastry is fully cooked and golden brown on top.
